Aberfan Loop, 21 December 2024

The weather was “damping” as the 10 plucky Merthyr Valley Ramblers (including welcome guest Caroline) gathered at Aberfan community centre today. Our seven mile walk started with a visit to the memorial garden then through the houses to the river footbridge and onwards to the railway footbridge and onto the Trevethic trail. The weather by this time had dried up but the wind was rising as we arrived at Pont y Gwaith but we continued on to the nature reserve seats where we had an early lunch. We retraced our steps to Pont y Gwaith and crossed the Taff using the old stone bridge then climbed up to the Taff trail. The return leg was uneventful until we visited the Aberfan cemetery, always a sad and moving place to visit. After a period of reflection, we then made our way back to the start. A big thanks to Hilda and Lynne and to all that made the walk so enjoyable - we even saw some sunshine!
