A Stroll Over the Foel, 12 April 2025

9 ramblers began with a stroll through Hirwaun, where we admired the impressive clock memorial, continuing onward, we passed the site of the old ironworks, which dates back to the 18th century. Following the serene River Cynon, we meandered along the old mineral line. This tranquil path, now fringed with flora, echoes the industrious past of horse-drawn trams and later steam locomotives. Heading northward, we passed the renowned Penderyn Distillery, as we ascended towards the crest of The Foel, the air was tinged with smoke from hillside fires. A vigilant farmer in his trusty Land Rover and a nearby fire crew ensured safety in the area. At the trig point, we paused for lunch, soaking in breathtaking panoramic views of Bannau Brycheiniog, Penderyn, Rhigos, and Hirwaun. Retracing our steps, we passed St. Cynog's Church, a historic gem dating back to Norman times. A brief detour led us through Pontbren Llwyd, a site steeped in local lore and history. Its name, meaning "the dark huts," harks back to the area's early agricultural traditions and grazing rights granted by Prince Gwrgan ap Ithel Ddu in the 11th century. Finally, we rejoined the old mineral line for the return leg.
