Seven enthusiastic ramblers gathered at the chilly Risca Leisure Centre, ready for an adventure led by Peter. Our journey began across fields to the Crumlin arm of the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal. This historic canal, completed in 1799, was vital for transporting coal and iron to Newport. Heading east, we enjoyed a leisurely and flat walk, but the real challenge began as we turned northward before Crosskeys. A steep climb through woodland had us shedding layers as the day warmed up. The chill of the car park was soon a distant memory! We stopped for lunch on the forestry track below Twmbarlwm, a hill with an Iron Age hillfort believed to have been built by the Silures. The views towards Newport were simply breathtaking. Refreshed, we continued eastward towards Cwrt Henllys and its solar farm, which has been operational since 2016 and contributes significantly to renewable energy in the area. Passing by Pant yr-eos Reservoir, completed in 1878 to supply water to Newport, we marvelled at its serene beauty. Our path then took us through the woodland at Craig y Merchant, a picturesque area that added to the day's charm. Turning south, we headed homeward through Craig y Wenallt, an ancient woodland with stunning views down to the Severn Estuary. The day ended perfectly with some well-earned refreshment at the Tiny Rebel brewery pub. Founded in 2012, Tiny Rebel has become a local favorite, known for its innovative craft beers. A fantastic day with kind weather, great company, and beautiful scenery. Thanks to all for making it a memorable experience!
