From the car park at 14 Locks, 11 ramblers including guests Sarah, Emily, Anne, Heidi and Anthony headed down the lane towards Ynysyfro reservoir, then passed Ynysyfro farm and picked up the quiet lanes until we entered Mescoed Mawr woods. Before leaving the woods we had our coffee break and again picked up a lane leading uphill until we picked up a footpath which followed Bettws Brook all the way to Malpas and the Monmouth and Brecon canal. We then joined the canal and walked towards Newport until we met the M4 underpass. We had lunch at Crindau park which was totally water logged, the football field and kiddies playground only occupied by birds. We continued west along the canal. A bit further along is the Allt-yr-Yn Nature reserve, which once housed Newport's Lido, opened in 1934 for three decades, it offered locals a place to swim, sunbathe, and escape the everyday. Thanks to Huw for the historical information and photo's. More information can be found at https://www.southwalesargus.co.uk/news/25423955.newports-lost-lido---past-making-big-splash/ We returned to the main path and continued west and along the canal back to the car park. Thankfully it stayed dry all day, after yesterdays downpour. A few of us then enjoyed a refreshing pint at Tiny Rebel Brewery.
