13 of us Merthyr Valley Ramblers arrived at Cwmtillery Lakes this morning for my 9 mile circular over the Coity mountain, taking in the Big Pit before returning over the mountain. It was a hot and humid day as we climbed up past the lakes and reservoir on to the mountain, once over the brow we arrived at our yea break spot with panoramic views of Big Pit, Blorenge, Skirrid, Sugar Loaf and more. Refreshed we made our way down towards the Whistle Inn/campsite before turning to follow the Blaenavon Steam Railway where we stopped to admire the engine on duty today. We made our way to the top of the Coity Tip for a photo of the group before descending to Big Pit. It was then on to our lunch spot at the rugby pitch, this was always a fantastic lunch spot but there are now benches/picnic tables aplenty affording us a very comfortable and necessary rest before the inevitable climb back over the mountain. Steady progress soon had us at the old Colliery building which is now a little worse for wear, our final push upwards saw the rain come in but by the time most of us decided to get our waterproofs on we were soon under the sunshine and removing layers again. From here the ground was level before descending back on our original path to the cars by the lakes. Thanks to all that attended, was good to have welcome guests Belinda and the 2 Carol's along also today.
