Seven extremely lucky ramblers met in bright sunshine at Nelson Wern park at the start of our 10 mile walk today. We started by walking through the Nelson suburbs where we caught the Rhymney valley ridgeway walk heading south to Llanfabon. At St Mabon's churchyard, we paid our respects to the Albion colliery memorial erected for the eleven miners killed in 1894 then headed for Eglwysilan common, admiring the wheeling red kites on the way. We stopped for a cuppa on the climb to the top of Mynydd Eglwysilan where we enjoyed the start of the panoramic views. At the top it just got better as the Severn estuary came into view as well as the Merthyr and Cynon valleys. We then dropped into Senghenydd, paid our respects at the small memorial before having lunch at the beautifully maintained main Miners memorial. Refreshed, we then began the long climb up the steps and road to Maes-diofal where we headed North to Wern-isaf, crossed the road and took the path to Parc Penalta. We then followed the railway to the crossing then made our way back to the carpark. A wonderful walk in superb weather, made perfect by the great company.
