Miners Memorial, 10 October 2026

A very enjoyable Miners Memorial walk today. Great to see walkers from 6 different Ramblers groups (Merthyr Valley, Gelligaer, Pontypool, North Gwent, Vale of Glamorgan and Penarth). Setting off from Nelson we headed to Llanfabon to view the Miners Memorial graves remembering 11 unknown miners from the 1894 explosion at Albion Colliery. Then a further climb up to Eglwysilan Common and the Senghenydd Dyke and a coffee break in the sunshine. A long descent into Senghenydd for lunch at the Miners Memorial Garden. It was great to meet dedicated volunteer Phil Mason busy cleaning stones ahead of the anniversary event on Wednesday. A long climb back up to the common and through the muddy sections where a new wind farm is being constructed before descending to Parc Penallta and back to the start. A wonderful 9.5 walk led by Alan Hancox.
