Tabletop Mountain, 28 June 2025

Today, 8 hardy ramblers set off from Beaufort Street Car Park in beautiful Crickhowell, ready to conquer one of the area’s most iconic peaks Table Mountain. Led today by Caroline, the group headed northward on a challenging but rewarding climb. Table Mountain is the site of an Iron Age hillfort, known as Crug Hywel, which gives Crickhowell its Welsh name. Perched above the Usk Valley, it offers breathtaking 360-degree views and a real sense of history, it’s not just a hill; it’s a step back in time! Our route followed a section of the legendary Cambrian Way, often dubbed “the mountain connoisseur’s walk.” This long-distance trail stretches from Cardiff to Conwy, showcasing the very best of Wales’ mountainous terrain. To walk any part of it is to be part of something truly special. After nearly two miles of steep incline (and plenty of breathers!), we reached the summit and took a well-earned rest with views that made every step worthwhile. The descent was far gentler, passing a traditional sheepfold and winding our way downhill through peaceful farmland and open moorland. The perfect end to a glorious walk? A visit to The Bear Hotel in Crickhowell! One of the oldest coaching inns in Wales, it dates back to the 15th century and is brimming with character, oak beams, roaring fires, and a warm welcome. Just like the town itself: steeped in charm, nestled beneath the Black Mountains, and a hub for walkers and adventurers alike. A huge thank you to all who joined us today, great company, great weather, and another memorable ramble in the bag!
