Talgarth & Pwll,y,Wrach, 2 August 2025

Today's walk had a little twist. I stepped in as walk leader after Hilda, who had meticulously planned the route, sadly injured her foot. Get well soon, Hilda, we missed you today! A bumper posse of 17 ramblers gathered at the car park in Talgarth on a beautifully warm and dry day. Luckily, a gentle breeze kept us cool as we set off through the pretty village and out towards the Pwll,y,Wrach Nature Reserve. Pwll,y,Wrach (Welsh for Witch's Pool) is steeped in folklore. This tranquil woodland was once part of the land owned by the nearby Talgarth Manor. The reserve is now a haven for wildlife and ancient trees, with the River Ennig running through its heart. We enjoyed the shady woodland paths before arriving at the main waterfall, reputed site of “the test for witches” where in centuries past, women accused of witchcraft were allegedly thrown into the pool. If they floated, they were “guilty” thankfully no such testing today, though the water was low anyway, we all passed untested! After our tea break beside an old red phone box (still standing proud!), we crossed open fields with stunning views of the Brecon Beacons. Reaching Pen y Bryn, we turned north before heading west beneath Rhos Fach, with the sun shining and panoramic views keeping spirits high. Lunch was enjoyed in a freshly hay, baled meadow and no, we weren't eating the hay! Just a perfect picnic spot with views to match. On our final leg, we passed the Talgarth Hospital, originally the Mid,Wales Hospital for the Insane, opened in 1903 and closed in 1999. Now derelict, it still sparks the imagination with its haunting beauty. Back in Talgarth, the group split for well, earned refreshments, some enjoyed tea and coffee at Talgarth Mill, a beautifully restored 18th,century flour mill that still produces flour today, while others headed to the pub just down the road. Thanks to everyone who joined us today and special thanks to Hilda for planning the route. We hope you're back on your feet and walking with us again soon!
